Known but Hidden Pollution from Vehicles
Pollution is the addition of unwanted particles to the atmosphere or the environment. Pollution may be natural or artificial. If the pollutants in the atmosphere are added due to the natural activities like volcano it is called natural pollution and if the pollutants are added in the environment due to artificial activities like fuel combustion, firewood burnt, industrial sewage, etc is called artificial pollution. Pollutions are of different types like water pollution, air pollution, sound pollution, soil pollution, etc. In Nepal the major problem is air pollution.
In the content of our Country Nepal the main problem is air pollution caused by the 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers. In Kathmandu Valley about 420,000 bikes, 80,000 private cars and jeeps, 30,000 buses and trucks and many GOs and NGOs vehicles are distributed to individuals and offices use (till 2011 January). The amount of different gases released from this also helps a lot in the global warming, greenhouse effects, ozone layer depletion and sea level raise. As a whole it can be stated as climate change.
Carbon monoxide Emission limit for petrol engine is 4 % of the total combusted fuel. But the real emission of carbon monoxide from petrol engine is 4.5 %. When a motorcycle runs a kilometer it emits 0.02 gm. of Sulpher dioxide, 0.07 gm. of nitrogen compounds and 0.20 gm. of SPM. When a car runs it emits 0.08gm Sulpher dioxide, 0.33 gm. of SPM and 3.20 gm. of nitrate compounds. Similarly when a truck runs 1 km it emits 1.5 gm. of Sulpher dioxide, 3.0 gm. of SPM and 21 gm. of Nitrate compounds.

Total pollution caused by the vehicles when it runs 1 km
S.N Vehicles Type Total Number(Estimated) Amount of SO2 Amount of SPM Amount of NX
1 Bikes 420000 8.4 kg 84.0 kg 29.4 kg
2 Cars 80000 6.4 kg 26.4 kg 282.4 kg
3 Trucks 30000 45.0kg 90.0 kg 630.0 kg
Now if all the vehicles run just a single kilometer a day it deposits 1202 kg of pollutants in the atmosphere. The estimated usage of a single bike and car per day is 20 km. Then the total pollutant due to usage of bike, car and truck 20 km per day is estimated to be approximately 24044 kg.
If a single city of our small country helps to deposit this amount of pollutants in atmosphere then the total deposition of pollutants in the atmosphere from all countries is really unbelievable.
So to prevent earth and its components along with human health, the usage of vehicles should be managed and the alternative source of energy like electrical energy, solar energy, etc. Should be used to reduce the pollutants.
